| Moira Smiley Composer : Vocalist This…This year past was a hot-air-balloon ride! It ROARED, and floated up! up! up! on breath of folksongs, indie-rock anthems, and choir festival hallelujahs! And the months read aloud new recipes for…well…setting up snare drums, tarantism, listening, being in time, nomadic recording technology, and how to keep chasing joy. Life is just PULSE – an electrical flicker on and off and on and off. How MOVING, what a relief that is…how easy to be afraid, and cling! Now… I’m cut loose in some scary new ways, and filled with projects that ask me for my deepest, most focused singing. After this past September’s release of VOCO’s new CD “Laughter Out Of Tears”, I quieted my band-leading, composing, choir-leading, music-directing mind to jump on a few tour buses for much of 2014 – 2015. In June, I’ll be seeking a new home for my between-tours music-writing, practicing and quiet time. Ideas welcome. Hush… (a month ago I wrote – still true…) Midwinter reaches quiet arms around this hemisphere. While injustice and deprivation tear at our human-ness, the earth seems to whisper ‘hush now…patience, little being’. Singing with tune-yards has kept alive the vow I made to myself in writing “How Can I Cry” – a vow to ‘sing for all the souls who do not complain’. I love the fierceness of Merrill’s music. And some of songs I get to sing with Solas share that ferocity…a cry against inequality & injustice. And I love participating in the choral tradition of lifting each other up by singing together. I feel grateful to the thousands of singers who have shared in my music this year. I have brave new plans for VOCO, harmony singing and stomp for this New Year!!
