Unzip The Horizon Songbook + Sing With Me

Unzip The Horizon Songbook + Sing With Me

Winter is (hopefully) over; the trees are budding, and so are we!

As the daffodils are in full bloom, my first songbook has entered the world! The Songbook is a compilation of arrangements for twelve songs from my latest solo album, Unzip The Horizon. I poured my heart into this, and I’m so happy to be sharing it with all of you!

Unzip the Horizon: Songbook

No doubt, if you’re following along on social media, you’ve been seeing a lot about my new Songbook that released on May 10!

What’s inside?

Twelve scores, lead sheets, body percussion, composer’s notes and personal stories… the real question is what’s not inside?! (Well, there are alternate voicings and arrangements that I’ll be releasing separately across the summer).

I always want my singing to invite others to sing. My work as a composer / arranger has shown me the incomparable kinetic, spiritual power of voices raised together. I wrote this Songbook to spread the seeds of these nomadic, original songs, which I know can travel happily in other voices & hands.

All original artwork!

Original illustrations crafted by Cao Minh Huy of Ho Chi Minh City weave throughout the Songbook, drawing upon the themes and feelings of each piece. Having another independent artist dedicate time to this project reminded me how I LOVE collaborating with other ‘makers’.  I love being connected across the globe by sharing these ideas and influencing each other’s art. I cannot thank Huy enough for his work, and hope you’ll might give his Instagram a follow!

Sometimes, no matter how positive it is, growth can be daunting.
“Oh, what a pretty thing it is / I’ve been looking for it all my life / All my life I’ve been looking for this thing that I see  And here it now is and I don’t know what to do with it / And I feel like I’m gonna break it…”

SING WITH ME

October 4-6, 2019 — “Why Sing?” Workshop

Experience the social impact of singing in this fun weekend for all levels, co-taught by Charlie Beale and myself!  Omega is a beautiful, woodsy retreat center — famous for its year-round music and spirituality classes, close proximity to NYC, and delicious food. Charlie and l both have a hundred things to teach you about leading others into singing, community and activism. We’ll teach songs based in jazz, folk, and pop traditions – focusing on how to arrange and write original songs for, and within a group, how to connect with audiences, and how to free your wildest voice!

May 22-24, 2020 Vocal Colors: Carnegie Hall

A few select choirs from all over the world are coming together at Carnegie Hall to perform my music with me next May! The concert features soloists and smaller ensembles, while beginning and ending with a powerful, mass choir to raise the roof off of Carnegie Hall! The music I’ve chosen for this special program is vivid with bright, calling voices, body percussion, and songs that uplift and strengthen us.

If you’re interested in taking part in this event, there are a few spaces left for choirs to join.  It’s going to be incredible! Please contact kevin@dciny.org for more information!
