Haiku – SATB + String Quartet + Piano + Percussion

Haiku

Parts: SATB + String Quartet + Piano + Percussion
Pages: 5 Pgs with Cover (Conductor’s score)
Description: 3 min. — “In this world we walk on the roof of hell gazing at flowers”

Haiku is a meditation on the fragile play between the suffering and pleasure of living encapsulated in this 18th century Japanese poem by Kobayashi Issa, translated by Robert Hass. The choral parts move from unison to divisi across the piece, while bird-like soloists interact playfully with the percussion. The piano provides full, rich jazz-inflected chordal foundation. Haiku is excerpted from my secular liturgy “The Song Among Us.”

Originally premiered by Cincinnati Vocal Arts Ensemble, March 2022. Rearranged with string quartet in February 2024 and premiered on April 21st, 2024 by the Denver Choir League.
